ALA MN Webinar: RFID Technology and Protection - What it Really Does (and What It Doesn't).

Most of us carry RFID technology every day—inside our work badges, our passports, our credit cards, and even library books.

Yet there is widespread confusion about what RFID actually does. Is it tracking us? Can someone scan your wallet from across the room? Are employers secretly monitoring employees through badges?

This session cuts through the myths and replaces them with reality. Using real stories and relatable examples, we will explore how RFID works in everyday life—how a toll tag knows when you drive through, how a key card opens a door,   and how warehouse , organizations, and libraries use RFID to manage collections. We’ll also look at where the genuine risks exist, including card skimming, cloning, and data logging—and where fears are largely exaggerated.

Attendees will leave with a practical understanding of what RFID can and cannot do, along with common-sense steps individuals and organizations can take to reduce risk without overreacting. This is not a technical lecture—it is a reality check.
